The Man with the Laughs

Gooooooooood-byyyyyyye Vietnaaaaam! That's right, I'm history... I'm outta here. I got the lucky ticket home, baby. Rollin, rollin, rollin'... keep them wagons rollin', rawhide! Yeah, that's right... the final Adrian Cronauer broadcast... and this one is brought to you by our friends at the Pentagon. Remember the people who brought you Korea? That's right, the U.S. Army. If it's being done correctly, here or abroad, it's probably not being done by the Army.

In honor of Robin Williams, I've decided to forsake the rules and simple post a lot of what made him special to us: his humor and ability to make us laugh!!

Genie: [turns into a cheerleader] Rick 'em, rack 'em, rock 'em, rake! Stick that sword into that snake!
Jafar: You stay out of this!
Genie: [Weakly] Jafar, Jafar, he's our man; if he can't do it, great!

When Christopher Reeve was in the hospital after his accident, Robin came to visit him. Reeve said this about that surprise visit:
Then, at an especially bleak moment, the door flew open and in hurried a squat fellow with a blue scrub hat and a yellow surgical gown and glasses, speaking in a Russian accent. He announced that he was my proctologist, and that he had to examine me immediately...it was Robin Williams...for the first time since the accident, I laughed. My old friend had helped me know that somehow I was going to be okay.
When Stephan Spielberg was filming "Schindler's List", Robin would call him to cheer him up. I think I only called him once, maybe twice. I called him when I was representing People for the Valdheimers Association. A society devoted to helping raise money to help older Germans who had forgotten everything before 1945. I remember him laughing and going 'thank you.'"

I was gonna say that wasn't the case, but honestly the last time it was properly (as in several new topics made per day) active was probably 2007 which was 7 years ago :/

I don't know whether this site will survive or not, but it helped shape my life more than I can imagine. Earlier I was just an average Indian who used to type like this "Every Word Has To Be Capitalized. And No Space After Punctuation Marks." and no interest in anything but games. But since I joined this site, my English improved drastically, even if it is still not at the level you guys are on, and I began taking interest in global issues to know what the forummers were talking about. I feel quite lucky that I stumbled across this site and stayed on.

Well, that almost sounded like an obituary.

I miss how this place used to be.
Like when you were here everyday?
It happens when we don't draw a crowd like we used to. I was drawn to here by RTWH, and because the little link, which showed if there were new posts here or not, was always orange, so I figured I would stop by here and have been here ever since.

When i first joined, i stuck only to the RTW section, and never posted in The Baths. It was only after about a year or so that i actually started posting in The Baths. I remember my first post was in a party thread and it was discussing soccer, and i posted but was basically completely ignored and everyone kept on going lol.
The new Heavens don't have this, so it just looks like another dead end part of the forum.
Yea, i see this as well as a major problem. Our most recent section R2TW doesn't have a hotlink. I was thinking something along the lines of an amalgamation of the TW forums as a possible measure, but i doubt it would work technically.

My average posts per day is still twice yours, so shut up.

Seriously though, I'm here more than you'd think, I just don't post that much. Maybe that's the difference - everyone's slightly older, slightly less enthusiastic... I suppose I still kind of think that a population/activity boost would be the answer to all our problems.

What would solve a lot of population problems is for RTW and Medieval 2 to experience a massive sales campaign, with maybe some new mods/content available.

Sales draw customers, who seek out forums for help, and finding one they like, stay for a while.

But nothing and nobody stays forever.

There are a few technical difficulties to overcome with a forum amalgamation, however, it certainly is not impossible. My main point against forum amalgamation would be that our forum software is that old and customised that is doesn't exactly do a great job of being minimalist when you shove a bunch of new categories and forums in for every standalone game since RTW on top of what we already have, a massive six at the least.

When you have to scroll past a number of uncollapsable, to minimize the screen space taken up, categories to reach the actual game forum you want it can be an annoying experience for some people. I do feel some of that could be compensated for with a re-think of how we structure our forums, how many times does the General Discussion forum seem some topics suited to Strategy & Tactics posted in it anyway?

When things were generally more active and new people joined more often I would say "quite often". Also, as an example, additional screen space could be saved by incorporating every Guides & Article forum in to one, with instead people listing in the thread topic which game\heaven the article is for.

Our lack of unique user-created content in the way of scenarios and mods (the best sort of UCC) probably does not help given how large of a driving factor it has been for TWC at times, or as a closer to home example our own "Age of" Heavens. Neither is Total War similar enough to RTS games like Dawn of War, Starcraft or AoE where lots of activity can be generated by being the hub for all things "competitive gaming" where all the "Pros" hang out and people naturally follow.

Not to mention I have a really strong dislike for double, or more, posting unless it is for a great reason. I should probably get over that, but it would feel odd talking to myself on R2H .

If we want more users here in the RLT, couldn't we just make the link to here a seemingly direct link, where it shows when a new post is made, similar to how it is viewed from RTWH? When you're on NTW/S2TW/ETW/R2TWH it's a seemingly separate link that shows no indication of what I am going to be clicking on, or how active it is. The orange dot is what drew me to the Tavern.

Talking of mods and Total war, I realised the other day that I have been wait for the release of EB 2 for something close to at least 4 years. When I think of the amount of times I have hyped myself up for it in the past, not realising that several years later I would still be waiting I feel fairly foolish.

I feel the same. I've had the same feelings with the Taleworlds forums, I used to hang around there a fair amount even if I didn't post much but now hardly ever. Then again, I quit playing competetive Warband a couple of years back, which probably plays a large part of that.

Really, I rarely venture outside of the RLT.I think that the stagnation of the RLT is the fact that the Total War series has been on the decline recently.

Edit to avoid irritating Scipii: I don't know which I hate more, how much Top Gear makes fun of the U.S. or how they are spot on a lot of the time.

Rome II has been a disappointing after all the hype unfortunately, however, less so Age of Wonders 3 fortunately for that lot. There are a number of great modifications out there for Rome II fortunately. Though none of them have really scratched my itch just yet.

I have my own ideas on how to make use of Rome II's mechanics to craft a better game. However, my lack of experience modding the seemingly more complex Warscape engine goes against me. To change that I am going to have to be interested in fewer games and dedicate more time to learning about the insides of Rome II and Warscape.

The curse only continues this Late April and May with the releases of games like Wargame: Red Dragon, Age of Mythology: Extended Edition, Tropico 5 and more. Though I could certainly populate the place with a few articles on my ideas if anyone wants some reading content .

Absolutely loved Age of Mythology back in the day, I even managed to wrangle a few friends in to playing some glorious MP back in 2011 for a couple of months. Also wrangled three others in to go buy a 4-pack on Steam bringing the price further down to roughly $18 (USD), pretty similar to AoE2:HD's pre-release pricing IIRC and I got a metric ton of enjoyment out of that regardless of the "suspect" pricing.

Maybe some day Microsoft can get around to letting someone at least try and develop a proper Age of Empires sequel. AoEO failed to capture my attention for numerous reasons that other people here possibly also felt at the time.

When I think of the amount of times I have hyped myself up for it in the past, not realising that several years later I would still be waiting I feel fairly foolish.
I was working on that ages ago... got bored because of atrocious project management and R2 was coming out anyway. And they wouldn't let me challenge work they'd already done without proper peer-reviewing (*cough* Pritanoi *cough*).

I think there is merit to some of these suggestions about re-organising the forum listings/display/thingummies; I think things like obviousness and ease of navigation might have more importance than one might think. I have always thought that "general" should be merged with "strategy" (for the subheavens where that is the distinction that is used); I also agree with giving more precedence to the Tavern (livelinking that never happened?) - that's where the community has always basically been. Also, you know, I hate to say it, but I wonder if "bardic circle" puts people off the war stories forum.

I guess these are all things you've already discussed in your secret moderator mediums... but if you want to reinvigorate a place, I'd say you've got to try something. Obviously TW aren't going to release anything new for the older games; I don't believe that is the problem. It would be one solution yes. But the old games still have a ton of regular players, with regular player needs; I suppose the vocation of this place is to create a place they are likely to find and will want to hang around.

That reminds me, I feel like the forum categories could do with re-arranging at the least, with the more active categories closer to the top for example. The two categories, and their respective forums, for TWH hosted Rome and Medieval 2 mods are higher in rank and subsequently seen first above the forums for the two games despite being less activity or effectively dead these days.

You know what they say about first appearances and all that. Though given these forums are largely the domain of RTWH and M2TWH I feel like that kind of decision is for Terikel and EoJ to make, as the Seraphs of those two respective Heavens.

I thought about that. Agonized over it is more to the point.

On the one hand, we do want people to see that we have other games before they jump into the community forums. On the other, the links show blue buttons which do not indicate activity. (I do so want to be able to change them for the orange buttons).

Same with the Downloads. I am going to move them back into the RTWH section.
