I have to confess that I didn't fight many naval battles when the game came out first but I'm fighting more of them now and every now and then, you get a right rare tussle.
Last night I (Marathas) fought an engagement in the eastern Med with the Ottomans.
They had 3 3rd rates, 2 4th rates, 2 6th rates, two trade ships and a bomb ketch.
I had three 2nd rates and two 4th rates.
I was in single line formation and targetted the bomb ketch first. That went down quickly enough having landed one heavy hit on my first 2nd rate, which went on fire. I then tried to eliminate the 3rd rates but the smaller ships were causing me problems with their mobility so I had to take out the trade ships and 6th rates. During this chaotic time, I lost both 4th rates and a 2nd rate routed but I finally had them down to their three 3rd rates with my two 2nd rates. A game of cat and mouse ensued and I sank a 3rd rate but my 2nd rate took an awful pounding and was on the point of routing when a lucky turn saw one of the remaining enemy ships get snagged on wreckage. I used my good 2nd rate to send the unlucky sods to Davy Jones' locker.
With this news, the spirits of the wavering ship recovered and it became a race against time for two damaged 2nd rates to sink an undamaged 3rd rate. This was achieved...just about and the surviving three ships limped home to port in Syria.
