My second AAR attempt. I abandoned the first one as I was unhappy with the writing. I hope I do better this time.

Preamble by Dr Martin Williamson, Professor of Modern History at the University of London

The European War of 1984 erupted after a naval incident in the North Sea between the Royal Norwegian Navy frigate "Odyn" and the Soviet Navy Cruiser "Kursk" which saw gunfire exchanged in the context of the early 1980s which were characterised by heightening of Cold War tensions, the end of detente and several flashpoint incidents, such as the NATO Able Archer 83 exercise and the Korean Airliner incident. Miraculously, no strategic nuclear weapons were used, but, as these accounts can show up, tactical strikes were used on military targets.

The Warsaw Pact Offensive in Germany had been successful, with mainly American and West German troops unable to stem the tide and East German troops reached the Rhine in several locations. However, a landing in the Crimea, and attacks on the Pact from Greece and Italy by British, American, Greek and Italian troops proved to be the weakness of the USSR as Bulgaria nearly collapsed, the Crimea having large areas under occupation and Italian mountain troops poised to enter Czechoslovakia via Austria, the situation was bleak and peace talks were taking place in Geneva. In this context, General Gruber of the East German Army suggested an offensive through Denmark and Sweden to seize the vital port of Aarhus. The Politburo accepted his suggestion. This is the historical context for the following record.

[THE FOLLOWING DOCUMENTS WERE CLASSIFIED AS 'RESTRICTED' UNTIL THE COLLAPSE OF THE SOVIET UNION IN 1991]

War Diary of Lieutenant General Alexansdr Karenin, Commander Northern Europe, Soviet Army

Day 1: April 17th, 1984.

Theatre forces currently consist of the 227th Guards Tank Regiment, roughly equivalent to a Western Mechanised Brigade, but generally larger. The East German 9th Motor-Schulzen Regiment, again a Brigade-sized formation, is expected to be available on the Hamburg-Kiel Axis within 24 hours. The 227th Regiment has landed in Southern Sweden near Kalmar and will be moving south towards Aarhus, which the Politburo expects the Red Flag to fly over within 5 days.

http://i.imgur.com/avTAFQ9.jpg

The Swedish Army's main armoured formation, the 7th Pansarbrigaden is near Malmo and must be removed if the advance is to take place.

http://i.imgur.com/v1GDcBD.jpg

At 0600 hours, the 227th, under Brigadier Zaytzev advances towards the Swedish positions and contact is made at 1200 hours. The Swedes are attempting to block an advance and hold the Helmstad-Copenhagen axis, although they are outnumbered and suffer from inferiorities in equipment. Intelligence suggests the Swedes are lacking for heavy armour. The Main Battle Tanks they possess are old West German models and their forces are geared towards light infantry and their relatively strong air force. Our forces positioned on the eastern bank of a river, and must cross a bridge in order to cross while holding supply lines back to Kalmar

http://i.imgur.com/mxPkVUJ.jpg

SITREP AT 1200 HOURS:

The regiment has divided into two forces, a main force to attack towards Copenhagen, and a smaller force to secure the way to Helmstad. The Helmstad force is made up of an armoured company of T-72 tanks supported by 2 logistics lorries. They also have a mobile command vehicle to hold the junction. The main force to Copenhagen has an armoured company of T-72 tanks upgraded with wire-guided anti-tank missiles, 2 companies of mechanised infantry and a surface-to-air missile launcher. Both forces benefit from air support from a MI-24 helicopter gunship and a SU-24 fighter jet which will be providing close air support on specific fire missions.

http://i.imgur.com/sURUtfj.jpg

Anti-tank missiles from the BMP infantry fighting vehicles make short work of an enemy armoured company with a SAM launcher spotted on the far side of the river. Regimental HQ's intelligence officer, Major Vorkoniv, reports that up to a third of the enemy's armour was caught here.

http://i.imgur.com/zWGab3O.jpg

Elements of both formations make progress nearly unopposed towards their objectives

http://i.imgur.com/fMg2nQW.jpg

The 4th Tank Company heads to it's objective, but there is an enemy helicopter and several light vehicles

http://i.imgur.com/N9KX9Dl.jpg

A bridgehead is achieved and the mechanised infantry roll towards an industrial estate, supported by the heavy armour

http://i.imgur.com/qz10P9Q.jpg

Objective Dimitri is taken by the 4th Tank Company and a mobile HQ is set up, which will be moved once the junction is seized and enemy reinforcements cut off. However, the 4th Tank Company was ambushed by Swedish infantrymen from the village in the objective area and routed. The attack will not be pressed for any longer until further units can be diverted from the main thrust

http://i.imgur.com/Ce37Sx3.jpg

The MI-24 attacks Swedish infantry in an industrial estate near the Copenhagen road, and then is used to mop up a light infantry platoon who was shooting at our logistics lorries

http://i.imgur.com/uxL56Jn.jpg

The MI-24 flies back to the Forward Operating Base for refuelling and restocking the ammunition while the Copenhagen road is secured and the 2nd Tank Company moves up to the other objective

http://i.imgur.com/antvF09.jpg

The 2nd Tank Company is attacked by Swedish infantry and light armour, but it fails to make much of an impact, however the crews are beginning to be rattled by the resistance

http://i.imgur.com/Ahb39GR.jpg

A close air support mission by the SU-24 removes all resistance in the area. Swedish resistance has been ended, there is no more fighting to be had as the 227th Regiment seizes all objectives and the HQ units are forward deployed to the objectives

http://i.imgur.com/0ZqSA9p.jpg

The Red Flag flies over Malmo and the heroes of the 227th Guards Tank Regiment are lauded in Pravda and receive a personal message of congratulations from Premier Chernenko himself.

http://i.imgur.com/eoMYYim.jpg

The East German 9th Motor-Schulen Brigade crosses the Danish Border at 0600 hours the following morning, and come under the command of General Karenin. The 227th Regiment spends the rest of the day consolidating their gains and regrouping.

Day 2: April 18th 1984

SITREP at 0600: The way to Copenhagen is clear, but Aarhus is held by a West German/Danish formation of unknown size. Both formations are under Soviet theatre command

At this point in the narrative, Dr Williamson will assess the 227th Guards Tank Regiment's strength and a brief biography of Lieutenant-General Karenin

ALEXSANDR KARENIN:

1938: Born in the village of Zamoshye near Rzhev in Western Russia to Petyr Karenin and Sasha Karenin, both farm workers

1941: Germany army occupies Zamoshye, father is conscripted into Red Army shortly before

1941-44: German occupation of Zamoshye leaves deep impact on the young Alexsandr, father is wounded at the Battle of Kursk as a T-34 crewman

1954: Aged 16, the young Alexsandr joins the Soviet Army

1956: Private Karenin fights against the Hungarian Uprising in Budapest and is recommended for officer training after distinguishing himself

1957: 2nd Lieutenant Karenin joins the 3rd Shock Army in Eastern Germany as an armoured commander

1962: During the Cuban Missile Crisis, Captain Karenin is reprimanded for questioning the belligerent attitudes of Khrushchev, he however seems to become more satisfactory in the eyes of the regiment's Political Officer after this experience.

1968: Major Karenin leads a company of T-55 tanks into Brno during the crushing of the Prague Spring, but the experience leaves him questioning the regime privately

1979: Now a Brigadier, he operates alongside Spetsnaz in Afghanistan in quelling the Mujahadeen insurgency

1981: After successful tours in Afghanistan, Karenin is made a Major General and commands the 28th Infantry Division in Poland.

1983: Receives command of the Northern European theatre, overseeing operations in Scandinavia and the Baltic Sea.

227th GUARDS TANK REGIMENT:

The regiment is made up of a mix of heavy armour and mechanised infantry in BMP-1 infantry fighting vehicles, strong fighting vehicles in their own right. It consists of 1 Tank Battalion and 2 Motor Rifles Battalions, however these often have armoured companies attached to them. The regiment also had access to Spetsnaz special forces units carried in MI-24 Hind helicopters, which were also available in a fire support role. The equipment is very modern, all tanks are T-72 and many are upgraded. Anti-Air and Anti-Tank guns are mostly missile-based now, but some anti-aircraft cannon still exists. All artillery pieces are self-propelled, in keeping with the mechanised mindset

My graphics are set very low to avoid my CPU overheating, the current heatwave is playing a big part. I've just finished that campaign, will post tomorrow. Our intrepid historian has another 3, much bigger (this was something of a tutorial campaign to ease you into it) campaigns to find out about. Next will see him investigating a NATO campaign several weeks later....

I bought European Escalation so what's going on in the screenshots I can decipher well enough.

Keep this one up!

Day 2: April 18th 1984

http://i.imgur.com/wQmm3Sq.jpg

The 227th Guards Tank Regiment took Copenhagen with little resistance, the main force left is the West German unit at Aarhus. The Kremlin authorises a tactical nuclear strike before the East German 9th Motor-Schulzen Brigade's attack scheduled for 1200 hours today.

http://i.imgur.com/WPapShz.jpg

The West German 18th Panzerbrigade has suffered from a tactical nuclear attack on the HQ and suffer from lowered morale and less initiative.

ASSESSMENT OF EAST GERMAN FORCES:

The only armour available is the outdated T-55 tank, but they are available in large numbers. The famed Panzergrenadiers are numerous and well-armed, just like their WW2 predecessors. Air support is provided by 2 MIG-17 ground attack aircraft.

http://i.imgur.com/mGrGTmU.jpg

The deployment is conventional with Panzergrenadiers ready to take the town and T-55 armour concentrated in the centre with an axis of advance along the road. They benefit from an anti-tank missile launcher and an air defence battery as well as 2 reconnaissance vehicles

http://i.imgur.com/djsK223.jpg

A detachment of troops and tanks encounter light opposition aiming to take the objective towards Copenhagen, but no heavy armour is sighted yet

http://i.imgur.com/tqkOoD5.jpg

Panzergrenadiers storming an industrial site spot enemy vehicles ahead of the main armoured advance

http://i.imgur.com/5fNavqb.jpg

Enemy armour engages East German panzers, inflicting casualties on the inferior tanks, but are destroyed by an airstrike by two fighter jets

http://i.imgur.com/Y3FCA3K.jpg

Enemy forces are now light and the armour is able to advance up the road towards Aarhus port, which has been seized by a flanking group of 2 mechanised infantry companies

http://i.imgur.com/fKWR0OR.jpg

Aarhus has fallen to the East Germans and the units are consolidating the gains

http://i.imgur.com/79s5NWA.jpg

The victory is massive and total, but casualties heavier than the Malmo battle

http://i.imgur.com/XIeSA64.jpg

*FLASH* AARHUS TAKEN BY ELEMENTS OF EAST GERMAN NATIONAL PEOPLE'S ARMY. RED FLAG FLIES OVER COPENHAGEN. DANISH RESISTANCE OVER *FLASH*

http://i.imgur.com/IdZ08nk.jpg

With Aarhus taken by forces under the German General Gruber, the Pact's negotiating position is greatly strengthened, despite Western protests to the UN. Lieutenant-General Karenin would be made a Hero of the Soviet Union for his part in the campaign.

However, there are many other forces taking part in this conflict, and this was just the beginning...

Historical Note:

After 2 weeks of fighting, Norway, Sweden and Denmark had fallen to the Warsaw Pact. The wider situation had changed though. After a tenacious defence of the western banks of the Rhine by American, British and West German troops, the Soviet offensive had run out of steam and was being rolled back. The Inner German Frontier had been reached by NATO after a week of fighting followed by an advance.

Supreme Commander Allied Forces Europe, General Matthew Johnson, authorises operations to retake Scandinavia. The British 1st Infantry Brigade, having liberated Kiel from East German Forces, is ready to attack Denmark and many units are ready for seaborne landings and airborne attacks. They are outnumbered, but Pact troops are tired and disorganised.

http://i.imgur.com/JnnAjZv.jpg

The 1st Infantry Brigade is ordered to retake Aarhus, meanwhile, the British 3rd Commando Brigade, made up of the elite Royal Marines, are to carry out a landing near Oslo, but in an unopposed sector. The other unit available today was a regiment of the 101st Airborne Division, but it was felt by NATO command that a seaborne landing would be more useful in the opening stages

http://i.imgur.com/wFP2DaA.jpg

The 1st Infantry Brigade arrives at Aarhus. It is made of 2 mechanised infantry battalions, the Lincolnshire Regiment and the Duke of Wellington's Regiment, and 1st Battalion the Royal Green Jackets, a light infantry battalion. Also, the Royal Dragoon Guards equipped with Chieftain and a company of new Challenger tanks are deployed. They start from the Kiel road against a defence centred on the port

http://i.imgur.com/sIgrG6n.jpg

The brigade forms up with Scorpion reconnaissance tanks in front of the Chieftains and infantry loaded up in FV432 armoured personnel carriers. Air support is a Jaguar and Sea Harrier. Abbot self-propelled Artillery has been made available

http://i.imgur.com/Ryfd1cI.jpg

The intial advance is nearly unopposed, but a group of light armoured vehicles is engaged by a Sea Harrier and destroyed

http://i.imgur.com/ZiJ7fXa.jpg

Copenhagen road secured, the brigade splits into 3 groups on each flank, but no armour with the left group, which is a holding group that has taken the port

http://i.imgur.com/wgfYsFs.jpg

Enemy units are advancing on the right flank and 2 squadrons of Chieftain tanks are dispatched

http://i.imgur.com/8yPau81.jpg

Fighting over a warehouse as a company of infantry dismounts their APCs and takes it from East German panzergrenadiers in close combat

http://i.imgur.com/NU6L2rl.jpg

3 tanks are ambushed by enemy infantry and destroyed, but the way up is being cleared. They have a helicopter gunship

http://i.imgur.com/HPqyBEw.jpg

Infantry have garrisoned the warehouse and the last enemy resistance is in plains to the North-East. Tanks are advancing

http://i.imgur.com/wCuPbgL.jpg

The tanks supported by a Jaguar destroy enemy resistance and Aarhus is taken back

http://i.imgur.com/KZFx3oQ.jpg

Next day, the 3rd Commando Brigade plans to attack Oslo, while a French armoured brigade lands in the beachead. 1st Infantry Brigade will take Copenhagen, which is currently undefended

3 Commando Brigade is made up of the elite Royal Marines, but is completely lacking in armoured support. British command takes a gamble and commits them to an assault on Oslo, hoping to use the urban areas to their advantage

http://i.imgur.com/cyIJh4D.jpg

The Brigade forms up with large amounts of infantry supported by a single tank squadron. There are 4 Lynx helicopters equipped with anti-tank missiles also

http://i.imgur.com/00f0o9J.jpg

Royal Marines move East and take an industrial estate, there is light opposition from an AA unit in the distance

http://i.imgur.com/q7siJOh.jpg

The enemy deploys a MIG which causes a lot of damage to ground troops before being downed by an RAF Tornado

http://i.imgur.com/v9T4nNF.jpg

Enemy units are gathering to the North-West, preparing for an assault on the NATO-held sectors

http://i.imgur.com/3EoKPMW.jpg

A large enemy armoured assault is attacked by an RAF Jaguar but the AA cover is good and the jets forced back. The Marines in the town may not be able to hold on

http://i.imgur.com/2UxLkps.jpg

Massive enemy attack is just about held off, but the losses are very heavy on both sides

http://i.imgur.com/0zzMYAc.jpg

The battle is a draw. The NATO gamble failed to pay off, but lessons were learnt about the unsuitablity of light infanty formations to fight armour, even in beneficial terrain

http://i.imgur.com/k7ifst7.jpg

At the beginning of the following day, the French armoured brigade moves towards Oslo and the West German 18th Panzer Brigade arrives at Kiel
