I have to say that if you were playing Holland or Spain, why would you ever build anything else, at least early in the game? There isn't a warship in the game, at least until third rates or better are available, that can stand toe-to-toe with these behemoths.
I'd go as far to say that the Pirates, because of the availability of these ships to them, are easily the dominant naval faction of the first third of the game. I understand that these ships were heavily armed historically, but again historically, typically didn't carry enough crew to adequately crew the cannon they had, weren't drilled nearly as effectively as naval crews and quite often, the cannon available were old and unreliable.
Not in ETW! And I won't even get into the hull strength! Cripe!
Sorry, just needed to vent. Your comments are welcome. Hope PAtch 1.4 addresses this somewhat.

That might be so. Beyond that, however, my main concern are the pirates. And I still don't understand why control of the Leeward Islands is a permanent cure for global piracy. Go figure.

Ha! I've found that toothpicks work better than floss, specifically the toothpicks on the ends of French muskets.

Somalia hasn't been discovered on the map yet. The pirates are hiding there!!
