Hello Friends,
I have a tough time viewing the battlefield. It takes way too much time to go to a particular area on the battlefield and order the troops to take a particular action, especially when the battle is spread across large areas. I have a tough time with especially dealing with cavalry charges flanking me since they move so fast by the time I realize they have flanked me it is too late to get my troops in position. Also once the battle has begun we can't get any info on the attributes of a particular enemy troop like the way we got when the battle was declared. For eg. I would like to know the melee defense points an enemy platoon has in order to decide whether to engage it in melee or not. I would like to use the pause button but wonder if that would be cheating.

Yeah the stats of the enemy you just have to memorize it a bit I guess.
Just know that provincial cavalry has lower morale but higher speed than normal cav. And some cavalry like hussars etc have a lot of charge bonus so beware of them attacking you.
You just got to keep a good look on the enemy cavalry, the distance and the terrain.
Just order short moves and move the camera behind your forces so you can see both them and the enemy ahead. when you see cavalry approaching order the infantry quickly to form a long line so they take position quickly and shoot the cavalry when they're charging.
Order them to form a line preferably where they're marching, not some distance ahead, but preferably higher ground and do it very near where they are, as they take some time forming the line and getting read to destroy the enemy attack.
when I have a cav unit trying to flank me I usually take 1/2 regiments of infantry and just keep facing them as they try to flank, that way when they attack, the infantry is ready. Keep marching the rest of your army ahead as ordered, just makes sure 1 or 2 inf are facing the enemy cavalry at all times, protecting your flank.

i pause all my battles. its helps me re-assess the battlefield and see where i should move next and where they might move next. i dont consider it cheating at all. if you really want to figure out the units abilities, make your own small battles. if your england have a unit of 33rd New York vs some a french line unit. this way you are only focused on that unit, and not a whole battle/army. its a good way to test out cannons to figure their firepower and range. def. check out the peckle gun( or whatever the hell its called, i never remember), that thing is a gatling gun just less ammo til you must reload. it tears infantry up. try it out, it'll help. also if you use w,a,s,d it moves the screen up,left, down, and right.... and if you left click and move the mouse it rotates your camera.
