What type were your ships? If you had, say, brigs and you sank a couple of 2nd rates I'd call it a sort-of victory.

unfortunately no, it was fairly even with brigs and sloops.
I got them to rout but then all my ships sank.

All i can say is lolz. If i saw my enemy chasing the fleeing me then sink I'd wheel around and start acting tough again, whilst firing my cannons of course.
