Hello everyone.

So, what fancy naval tactics do you all use to crush your foes in truly heroic fashions?

I find that sending your own ships into the enemy line to disrupt it (much like what Nelson did at Trafalgar) can be pretty useful, especially if their ships are smaller than yours. I beat 20 brigs and sloops with only a fourth rate and two fifth rates by doing that (not that sloops and brigs are that hard to bring down, but the odds - more than 6 to 1 - are still pretty staggering, for me at least).

What do you find works, and in what situations?

You also forgot that you can only have 14 ship's in a stack. Did the 20 Brig's/Sloop's have reinforcement's to make this battle happen?

No, sorry. I never counted the number of ships you could have in a stack. I always assumed that it was 20, just becaue that was the number of units you can have in a land stack. Either way it was a full stack vs. three ships, so clearly, disrupting an enemy line can work.

What kind of tactics do you use, Kiwi?

I start off in a nice neat line that gets upwind of the enemy before the battle degenerates into a mass melee. I usually try to gang up on one ship at a time then. You only need to give it a hammering on one side to sink it after all.

I usually draw up alongside their line with mine, fire off a few rounds and do the most damage possible. Then I wait for the perfect gap in the action to disrupt their line and if it works its usually game over for the enemy, BUT if you misstime it your favorite ships end up biting it after all the raking fire they recieve while crossing the line.

My tactic is a m8 called auto resolv. Its a genius tactic. But if i have to play, i normally get a brig or something hope it survive til it get to the enemy, get close to the strongest ship i can find, and boom it blows up and Al Quida have commed to the sea. After that i just hope my skills work.

Or i get a m8 to play for me, because im a fail in Navy battles, well the big ones with 10 and more ships, think its gets to boring.

Here's a tactic: Bring better or equal ships.

I've noticed that Third Rates just cannot stand up to Second Rates, no matter the circumstances. This has been on VH/VH, but still. Match your foe.

Also, as for the 14 ships in a stack, I checked it out, and while that is right, there were 20 ships in the stack that attacked my 3 ships, and I've fought several 20 brig and sloop stacks before on my Prussian campaign. I don't know what that was about, but that's what happened. Probably a glitch or something, or maybe some of the unit cards were just duplicated.

No worries...

In a typical fight against the AI, they will set up in the middle, single file, and sail directly for you. Their Admiral will probably be the first in line. The wind direction dictates where I set up, but I try to keep it simple and attempt to maneuver my hard hitter's to alway's hit the 'head' of their column with concentrated chain shot, on an angle that give's me less return fire. This alone often leaves their lead ship (and Admiral) dead in the water and thus blocking and bunching up his following unit's. Give's a chance for my following tail to get some effective shot's in while the enemy are floundering or disrupted.

From there I just try to tack back and keep pounding them as I go for another pass. And so on....

.....by which my micro-management has then failed me and everything degenerate's into chaotic custard!

And Raptor's prime tactic is a very handy one to avoid overly expensive bloodshed, which I agree with fully - bring better or equal ship's!
