Just a quick question because I'm trying to decide what to research next.

Is fire by rank effective in the field of battle?

Probably the most effective military tech in ETW. Just remember to form your men up in three ranks, with a few making up a fourth to step into the line when needed, and you should win any firefight

Yeah Fire by Rank has a huge effect on your battles. That and Canister shot are very significant for crowd control and giving you the edge in even battles.

Fire by Rank should be your absolute first tech to target, since its a significant advantage over any lesser-equipped line infantry.

The fact that Maratha's are incapable of it is a significant disadvantage in later game.

The only alternative would be to research towards a modern university since once you have that you can quickly clean up all the remaining techs.

Good luck!

I disagree. Cannister shot should be the first researched, as it's a huge bonus and opens up the next tier of artillery buildings. Without it, you're limited to the immoble artillery with only the inadequately performing round shot. Fire by rank is down in tier 3 of the infantry arm, and you're really gimping your artillery too much by focusing only on it.

It should be the second tech you target.

actually the first and most important tech should be plug bayonet which unlocks socket bayonet

And I will back up Gnarlyhotep, I think he got a very good point there, and I always does it. Canister gives you a boost that can do much more than plug byos. So for the cav fights before plug then you need to use pikemen or fight cav with cav.

Continental Army Award (most improved forumer) -- Sondre_norge
Napoleon Award (most likely to be promoted) -- Sondre_norge
( can only dream about that happening)

I typically go for Plug through diplomacy and trading, but if I can't buy it I'll research it first especially if I am a faction like Britain or France who has to face those Indian hordes in America early on. Canister is next priority.

Run a test custom battle between European line infantry and Maratha Bargir Infantry to see what a difference it makes.
